Diabetic Footwear

The potential foot problems which can be caused through diabetes are numerous:

  • Claw toes
  • Numbness
  • Insensitivity to temperature
  • Clumsiness because of poor position sense
  • Abnormal gait because of the above
  • Abnormal weight distribution causing rubbing or callus
  • Poor circulation
  • Poor healing

Clinicians will have differing views on suitable footwear for their patient, but all will agree that the aim is to protect the foot and reduce the risk of the above.

Reed Medical manufactures two ranges of footwear in a 'diabetic specification'.

  1. All styles are offered in soft calf leather uppers. Linings have minimum seams to reduce friction and lightweight soles with optional rockers. All shoes are fitted with 3 x 3mm poron insoles for cushioning or to allow room for custom made insoles.
  2. The 'Specialist' specification comprises firm calf leather uppers, through wedged soles with rockers, carbon fibre stiffened soles and rim toe puffs.

Reed Medical offers the option of soft leather or plush (soft foamed synthetic) as a shoe lining. The standard diabetic specification lining used is Toray 'See it Safe' X - Static, which is exclusive to Reed Medical.

The X-Static lining is the only significant "self help" preventative measure for the at risk foot. The technology is clinically proven to eliminate 99.9% of 800+ micro-organisms within one hour, including MRSA and VMRSA.

It is ANTI-ODOR, ANTI-MICROBIAL, ANTI-STATIC, THERMODYNAMIC, ALL NATURAL and PERMANENT.
